Mr Eugene Ong is a specialist colorectal surgeon who has undergone extensive training in the field of Colorectal Surgery. He has worked in the leading colorectal centres of the world alongside recognised pioneers and experts in colorectal surgery. He is especially skilled in minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic (“Key-hole”), single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS), robotic surgery, endoscopic surgery (colonoscopy) and Trans-anal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMs) and is now considered an expert in the field. He has published and presented papers on minimally invasive surgery, has been a member of faculty on courses of minimally invasive surgery both in Australia and internationally and has trained numerous other surgeons in the technique.
He is involved in teaching and research and has a number of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences as well as being an invited speaker. He is also a reviewer for the journal Colorectal Diseases, is a full member of the CSSANZ and appointed to the International Continence Society working group on terminology for anorectal dysfunction. Mr Ong treats the full spectrum of colorectal disease but has particular expertise in the management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis), functional and pelvic-floor disorders (incontinence, constipation and rectal prolapse) and endometriosis involving the colorectal. He is Director of Pelvic Floor Services at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne and Head Convenor of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Surgical Symposium which runs bi annually.
Mr Ong is dedicated to providing the best possible care for his patients and has a patient centred, friendly approach. He and the team will work together with the patient and referring doctors to ensure the very best outcomes are met.
He is appointed as a consultant colorectal surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital and Austin Health. He sees private patients in Fitzroy and Mt Waverley.

Mr Eugene Ong has been accepted to, and completed some of the most
competitive and prestigious colorectal fellowships internationally. The
Royal Brisbane Hospital fellowship is internationally renowned as a
world leader in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The Cleveland Clinic,
Ohio is recognised as one of the most prestigious colorectal fellowships
in the USA and is consistently ranked in the top hospitals in colorectal surgery.
It is especially well known for being at the forefront of managing
complex inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis),
familial cancer disorders, as well as being pioneers in minimally
invasive surgery. The colorectal unit at Oxford is also well known for
it’s management of inflammatory bowel disease, but more recently, has
been at the forefront of management of pelvic floor disorders
(constipation, incontinence, obstructed defaecation and prolapse) and
have been pioneers in a novel operation for the management of these
conditions (laparoscopic ventral rectopexy).
